About the school: Apollo High School was founded in 1996. We are an alternative education program that serves 160 credit deficient junior and senior students from the six comprehensive high school sites of East Side Union High School District. Now that these students are a part of the Apollo program, they are earning the necessary credits to graduate on-time with a high school diploma. In addition, every student is prepared for a vocational career, community college or a 4 year university path. The fact that we are poised to have more then 25 students applying to 4-year universities and 60 students applying to the community college system is a testament to the work and dedication of the Apollo Staff has to ALL students in the District. Community Service: Community service is another important part of our program. It is the means to connect students to the community in which they belong. We prepare and serve at the homeless shelter, participate in Clean the Bay and our food pantry. Once a month, in conjunction with Reaching Out, we prepare 30 pound boxes of food, fruits and vegetables and hand them out to about 100 food scarce families in our community. Support programs: Apollo is proud to have a FIRST Robotics team - the only alternative educational setting to have a team. We have a green house where students learn to write grants, grow fresh vegetables, and learn about hydroponic planting systems. We also have elective classes such as piano, computer coding and Spanish. We encourage our students and in fact, have about 1/3 of the school enrolled in Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) programs to learn career skills and an additional 15 students taking classes at the community college at night.

Interviews Continued... 1) What are the things you should look out for when growing up? I think when growing up, you should always watch out for yourself and others around you. Because not many people will and the ones who do are hard to come by. 2) Tell us about the project you are working on This year we are working on a robot for FIRST robotics and the set theme is SteamWorks. 3) What is one thing you did, that anyone can do to turn their lives around like you did? One thing you can do to turn around your life is just to motivate yourself. Especially if you are in an environment where the others around you are going down a bad path and they bring you with them or put down your aspirations.

I decided to become a teacher as a way to have an impact on my community; I have a passion for science and engineering that I love to share with my students. 2) What is the community needs to know about Apollo High school that they don’t know? Apollo is a SBN in Eastside union HSD, where students who are behind on credits catch up and earn their diploma on time. 3) How did Microsoft find out about your school and what is their involvement with The Apollo High? Microsoft is our main sponsor. They provide us with financial support and a mentor for programming. Microsoft was looking for a team in an underserved community at the same time I started the team in 2012.

One of my favorite parts about Pomona is that there's pretty much a community for everyone here.. and if there isn't, you can start one. When I say "community" I mean the various mentor groups on campus, sports groups, music groups, art groups... and its really easy to be fluid in them, too. The food is pretty good too. And the dorms are huge. I'm going into my junior year and I have yet to have a roommate. :)

Miso-Glazed Salmon INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons hot water 2 tablespoons miso (soybean paste) 4 (6-ounce) salmon fillets (about 1 inch thick) Cooking spray 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives

DIRECTIONS:

1) Precaliente el asador. 2) Combine los primeros 4 ingredientes, revolviendo con un batidor. Coloque el pescado en un plato de hornear poco profundo cubierto con spray para cocinar. Cuchara la mezcla de miso uniformemente sobre el pescado. 3) Asar a fuego lento 10 minutos o hasta que el pescado se desmenuce fácilmente cuando se prueba con un tenedor, arándolo dos veces con mezcla de miso.
