WE

Let’s Make Dreams Come True For The Next Generation And Congratulations to our 2017 Winners Hagamos realidad los sueños para la próxima generación

About two years ago, here at Local Community Hero’s, we took a leap forward to start providing a scholarship program to any graduating High School students in local districts. While we are ourselves are still early in the publication arena, we believe that our original cause remains incredibly important. That cause being the recognition of students and good Samaritans in San Jose, and hopefully beyond in the future. With that said, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the anniversary of our first scholarship awards in 2017 as well as the 2018 recpients on the horizon. Congratulations to Brenda Gochar, Truc Nguyen, Maria Moran, Elizabeth Rosales, and Jennifer Hernandez Garcia, our very first winners! We hope to deliver a follow up story to gain an even more inspiring perspective on the impact we have made for them. With all these things said, we hope that we have inspired anyone reading this story, as well as any entities who may feel inspired to become a part of this venture. We are more than happy to allocate our own resources into making this possible, but we are hoping there are others out there of the same warm-hearted mind as our team. Why stop at a few students when we can make a better future possible for a wider range of talent? After all, these young and talented individuals will be the work force of the future. Here at Local Community Heroes, we remain committed to changing lives.

Hero of the Year Martha Guerrero

The year is now 2018 and for almost two years Local Community Hero’s has been searching the community to recognize the students and teachers in San Jose Schools. In 2016, Mr. Vito Chiala was selected as the Local Community Hero of the Year. To end 2017 right, Local Community Heroes publication has now selected Ms. Martha Guerrero as the Hero of the year. It dawned on us to interview Ms. Guerrero as we had first approached her in 2016 with regards to our efforts in the community and she exclaimed, “When there is something bad that happens in schools, CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox and all TV channels comes down, but when there is something good no one asks.” Most notably, Miss Guerrero in 2017, has dedicated a great deal of time to recognize students more often than any other principal in the community considering all the responsibilities that the title Scan QR Code comes with. She has encouraged students to For Full Interview reach for higher goals and we simply must congratulate her for her efforts. She has always made herself available to students, so today at Local Community Heroes, we recognize her as the true Hero of the Students and Community for 2017. Make sure to checkout the video by scanning the QR code for the full interview, but we also want to highlight some important points from her interview. Ms. Guerrero was modest about her role simply being a relay for the staff to keep her informed about the activities of the students and their participation...

Make sure to checkout the video by scanning the QR code for the full interview, but we also want to highlight some important points from her interview. Ms. Guerrero was modest about her role simply being a relay for the staff to keep her informed about the activities of the students and their participation. Ms. Guerrero however has been around at Mt. Pleasant High School much longer than her endeavor as principle having been an assistant principal and teacher for a grand total of 31 years. She praised her staff for taking the burden of trust from parents along with herself, to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the students of Mt. Pleasant. She also took the time to recognize parents as the very first teachers of their students as they know their children better than anyone. The the collaborative effort between school staff and parents is imperative given the Scan QR Code economic difficulty unique to the bay area For Full Interview often keeping parents very occupied. We applaud Ms. Guerrero for her accomplishments and she wishes to pass her honor to the staff and students who make it all possible.

How to Get Prepared for Valentine's Day How can you save for that special day to give “bae” the best treat? Original Content By Olugboyinwa Ajomale Valentine’s day is in a few weeks from now which means a lot would be going through the mind of people especially in the minds of young people, wondering how they can save for that special day. Things like how to get money to treat bae right on Valentine’s day, where to take bae to and what to get bae for Valentine’s day. 1

2

Set a spending budget: Valentine's day is a big and serious deal for so many people especially young people so the first thing to do is to set a spending budget for the special occasion. Start comparing gift prices: The earlier you start comparing prices of gifts for valentine’s day, the better. Go online or go out just to check and compare prices of gifts. This would give you an idea of how much you need to spend on gifts.

3

Look for special deals and offers: Shops and outlets, restaurants, gift stores would be giving special deals and offer for Valentine’s day.

4

Create a mini savings: Since Valentine's day just comes just once in a whole year, you can set up a small savings to start saving for it. You really don’t have to open a new savings account for that purpose, you can just have a piggy bank where you put in some money every time.

5

Cut down cost: You need to look for ways to cut down cost on your normal day spending. This would help you save more on things which you don’t necessarily need for that period. You can put the money you save on cutting down on stuff into your mini savings.

City Year at Work City Year is a non profit organization with the goal of aiding educational institutions where they may not be able to accomplish everything that they may want to financially. We encountered these volunteers after our previous interview at none other that Mt. Pleasant High School. This art work is meant for the further inspirations of students. Stay tuned for our next issue where city year will be assisting a local artist with his work.
