Meet Mt. Pleasant’s Literary Society

A literary movement has been revived at Mt. Pleasant High School in more ways than one. In a time when students have so much to say and so few opportunities to say it, this has never been more important. Students do not always have an outlet for their personal thoughts about everything that is going on at school and out in the world--one of the goals at Mt. Pleasant is to give students those outlets with which to speak. Karina Arriola, a sophomore and the vice president of Mt. Pleasant’s Literary Society, shared that “None of my friends are really passionate with creative writing like I am, so it’s difficult to go to others for support or recognition.” That was until she joined Literary Society. As a new teacher and advisor, Raven Sisco recognized both the opportunities and the challenges of taking over the award-winning program. “As a first-year teacher being asked to take over an award-winning program at Mt. Pleasant, I knew that I had big shoes to fill. Joe Lovato, the former advisor for Literary Society, passed the program to me because of my experience with and enthusiasm for creative writing. It was my dream to work with a creative writing program that could make a difference to students--I was lucky that Lovato entrusted both the program and publication to me.” Literary Society is an after-school club offered through the Goodwill Assets program where students gather once a week to write. It is open to any Mt. Pleasant student who wishes to join. Students are exposed to different genres of writing and examine published texts as well as work written by their peers to inspire their own pieces. Introduciendo la Sociedad literaria de la Escuela Secundaria Mt. Pleasant

By eibbed0001 AllRecipes.com

3) Beat brown sugar, 3/4 cup butter, egg, and vanilla extract in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is creamy, about 2 minutes. Gradually beat in the flour mixture until well mixed. Pinch off about 1 tablespoon of dough, and roll it into a ball. Press the dough into the bottom of an ungreased cupcake pan cup, and use your thumb to press the dough into a small piecrust shape, with 1/4-inch walls up the sides of the cupcake cup. Repeat with the rest of the dough. Fill each little crust with about 1 teaspoon of the prepared pecan filling. 4) Bake in the preheated oven until the cookie shells are lightly browned, 10 to 13 minutes. Watch closely after 10 minutes. Let the cookies cool in the cupcake pans for 5 minutes before removing to wire rack to finish cooling.

Story Continued...

This club, in addition to the New York in Film and Fiction club, also offers students the opportunity to attend a field trip to New York that takes place every year. Alessna Duarte, a senior and the secretary of Literary Society, says, “I joined two clubs, Literary Society and New York in Film and Fiction. Starting off involved with the Literary Society led me to opportunities such as going to New York City and a Columbia University conference.” She and fifteen other students attended workshops at Columbia University to learn about creative writing, graphic design, and producing a publication. These classes prepared the students to then return to Mt. Pleasant and produce the literary magazine, The Cardinal Quill.

10 Tips to Beat Holiday Stress Original Article By St. Elizabeth News Service

Holiday stress comes in myriad forms. Too much to do, too little time, too many little niggling details that need attending. “The holiday season can be a time of great joy and excitement but also a time of stress and anxiety,” says Robert. D. Wells, Ph.D., a psychologist with St. Elizabeth Physicians Outpatient Behavioral Health. So, whether you’re stressed because you spent the afternoon circumnavigating the shopping mall looking for a parking spot or spent an entire evening trying to make small talk with your boss at the holiday office party, Wells recommends some basic strategies to help manage the stress and put the “ho ho ho” back in your holiday.

1

Get Some Rest

6

Stick to your budget

2

Don’t over induldge

7

Try doing some yoga

3

Stick to a schedule for your diet

8

Don’t push yourself too much with holidays chores

4

Get outside

9

Relieve your stress healthily like a hot bat, candles, etc.

5

Move around and work out

10

Don’t say yes to every party you’re invited to!

Reflecting on her experience, Duarte added, “After coming back from the trip, we collaborated on The Cardinal Quill which was really cool because many talented students got to showcase their writing talent.” Duarte and several other students, led by 2017 alumni Joyce Montenegro and Crisanto Fernandez, worked together on this project. Even students who did not attend the trip contributed to the Quill; a core group of about ten students came in during their time off over spring break to select both writing and art that would be featured in that edition of the magazine. Then, students paired those pieces together and created beautiful spreads that showcased the incredible creative talent at Mt. Pleasant. Montenegro chose the theme and title Revival to reflect the revitalization of the school’s literary magazine, which had not been produced for a couple of years. English teacher Joseph Frankina and Multimedia teacher William Cavada also provided guidance for the production of the magazine over spring break. Frankina brought experience with publishing a literary magazine, and Cavada lent his proficiency in creating the spreads in InDesign. The current president of Literary Society, senior Israel Alvarez, said proudly, “It was satisfying to put so many hours in the Quill and at the end have a finished copy.” Israel has been a member of Literary Society since he was a freshman, and was able to bring his expertise from seeing the production of the previous Quill. With the guidance of the seniors and admirable work ethic from all the students involved with the production, Literary Society was able to create a beautiful piece that showcased student writing, art, and design. Revival contains four languages other than English as well as poetry and prose from students of all grade levels which depict the student body of Mt. Pleasant High School. With the responsibility of producing a literary magazine in mind and a passion for creative writing, Ms. Sisco worked last year to recruit students to sign up for a new Advanced Creative Writing elective course; this elective program is only offered at two school sites in the district, the other being Yerba Buena High School. The students at Mt. Pleasant, eager for a place to speak their minds (in writing), took a chance to sign up for the brand new course. So far, students in the class have produced stunning pieces in both poetry and prose which will be featured in the next edition of the Quill. According to Ms. Sisco, “It is incredibly rewarding to work with students at Mt. Pleasant on their writing. The students in Literary Society and Advanced Creative Writing have continued to amaze me with their passion for writing and willingness to speak their truths.” Upon reflecting on her experiences in the club and the teacher who has given her opportunities to develop and share her voice, Karina Arriola says, “Ms. Sisco inspires me and she hasn’t actually been my teacher before, but she treats me like any of her own and she’s the one I look up to and without her, I wouldn’t have had the experiences I got to have.” Literary Society has many projects this year: the club is putting on a poetry slam on December 7th; it is hosting an open microphone and completing production of the Quill in the spring. With the dedication and creativity of the students at Mt. Pleasant, all of these projects will be excellent examples of students finding their voice in writing.
